Author’s Choice – Top 10 Books

1) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A wonderful story beautifully told by young Scout. Lee says something big but manages to keep it warm and human.

2) The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. A story and characters which stay with you long after you have finished reading. And one of the finest opening paragraphs ever.

3) The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Fantastically original, Niffenegger encourages us to suspend our disbelief by drawing such realistic characters. One of the best love stories ever.

4) About a Boy by Nick Hornby. Hornby’s wit and social observations had me smiling from beginning to end. An absolute master at what he does.

5) One Day by David Nicholls. Desperately impressive and an absolute joy. An original idea, superbly executed. Proof that you can write a ‘big’ book about two people’s relationship.

6) Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood. My favourite author. I’m in awe of her ability with words. Her descriptions of the relationship between the schoolgirl bully and victim are superb.

7) I’m the King of the Castle by Susan Hill. Read this for ‘O’ level English Literature at school and the sense of foreboding and terror Hill created has never left me.

8) Before I Die by Jenny Downham. Extraordinarily life-affirming for a book about someone who’s dying. Read the last third with tears streaming down my cheeks.

9) The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby. An amazing memoir painstakingly dictated by Bauby by moving one eyelid. Raw and heartbreaking.

10) Tell Me Something Happy Before I Go to Sleep by Joyce Dunbar and Debi Gliori. Have read this book more time than any others. The perfect bedtime story for under-fives. My son and I love it.
